“CAF”, or microcredit to help each other

Lhen she arrived in Belgium in 1994, Germaine Bucyedusenge was destitute: along with other members of the Rwandan community, she encountered financial difficulties in the face of a complex savings and loan system. The desire to help her family and the survivors scattered around the world following the genocide motivates her to bring together the members of her community to pool their finances: this is the start of La Payote, a solidarity microcredit association. After an annual subscription of around twenty euros used for animation and operating costs, members first save for six months. They can then borrow up to three times the amount saved.
