Create back-to-school routines effortlessly

We know children thrive on routine, so what can we do to instill and maintain good habits so that going back to school is a piece of cake this fall? Start by creating effortless routines to ensure more action, fewer questions, and a smoother transition between each part of your child’s day. Routines clarify responsibilities for all family members and help avoid disruption on school days.

To get started, consider a checklist for busy times of the day, such as school nights, school mornings, and after-school hours. The items listed below will help you get on the right track. Feel free to modify as you see fit! Once your kids are familiar with things, their routines will become second nature and you can ditch the checklists (or put them in a safe place in case they need a refresher from time to time!) Night before school

Children should:

  • Help him pack his lunch or make it on his own if you can (most kids can do it by age ten).
  • Complete homework for the evening or read with mom and dad.
  • Know what night is bath / shower night so they don’t constantly fight with you about it.
  • Spread out the clothes for the next day.
  • Have your backpack packed and waiting at the front door. Be sure to include all the necessary items for extracurricular activities.

School morning

Children should:

  • Get dressed and get ready for breakfast promptly.
  • Help out with breakfast or make your own if you’re old enough. Little ones can set the breakfast table and help load dirty dishes into the dishwasher when they finish eating.
  • Help out with lunches or pack your own if you didn’t make it the night before.
  • Brushing your teeth, washing your face, fixing your hair, etc. be fresh and clean for school. Young children should do their best before getting help with the rest.
  • Be ready at the front door waiting for Mom or Dad with your warm clothes on and your backpack packed.

After school

Children should:

  • Unpack your backpack and lunch kit right away. Post permission forms where parents can see them, dirty lunch containers in the dishwasher, and books and school supplies in the bedroom or pre-set area. (Parents should consider creating a family communication station and homework station to speed things up.)
  • Help yourself to a healthy snack after school. Mom and Dad can help by providing a selection of foods that are easy for children to eat.
  • Start or complete the task.
  • Set the table for dinner. Older children can help with dinner preparation if they are given instructions.
