The type of car you drive has a huge impact on how others perceive you. For example, I used to drive a cheap car from 1992 and the police would constantly stop me. However, now that I am driving a new Mercedes Benz, I have never been stopped. Not even once. My driving style hasn’t changed at all. Certain cars simply exude more respectability and status. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen luxury cars stopped before; it just hasn’t happened to me yet.

I have also noticed that most people are not very knowledgeable about cars in general and will automatically assume that you are rich because you are driving a luxury car. This is a complete fallacy since all luxury brands have entry-level vehicles that are very affordable and probably cost less than most SUVs. However, most people don’t think twice about someone SUV, but they will automatically assume that you are rich just because you drive a Mercedes. There is a big difference between a C-Class and an S-Class.

I read about a recent study that claimed that the type of car you drive does not lead to happiness because most people do not consciously think about what type of car they are driving all the time. Personally, I am constantly aware of the type of car I drive and never forget it. I always felt self-conscious driving a more modest car, but I feel so much better about myself now that I drive a luxury car. I am perhaps more self-aware than others, but I never forget it.

Let’s take a look at some common stereotypes. People who drive luxury cars are generally perceived as snobby and status conscious. SUV drivers are often considered adventurous, sporty, and fun-loving, while anyone who drives a minivan is often family-oriented. People who drive high-performance cars are generally considered aggressive and conceited.

Do you want a good car but don’t want to spend a ton? Why not consider a used car? Most people (if they are not a fan of cars) will not be able to distinguish between a new car and a used car that is only a few years old. Used cars also depreciate much less and many have been reconditioned to excellent condition. There are many options available, including used sedans, SUVs, used trucks, and coupes. The only thing that matters is that you are happy with your own car. It doesn’t matter if you drive a Chevy, Kia, Chevrolet, Buick, Honda, or Ford.
