Air Fryer Oven Really Better Than a Traditional Oven

An air fryer oven is a countertop appliance that circulates hot air around food to mimic the effect of deep-frying without all of the added fat. It is often touted as a healthier way to cook foods that are traditionally fried, and for good reason. It can be a good alternative to deep-frying (particularly for people who prefer not to use oil at all or are trying to cut back on fried foods) and offers the opportunity to prepare healthier versions of traditionally baked dishes, too.

But is an air fryer really better than a traditional oven? The answer is not as simple as yes or no, and it depends on how you are using the appliance. The key point to remember is that an air fryer oven works best for foods that benefit from dry heat, like breaded and fried fish sticks, chicken wings, potato wedges, and some casseroles. Air frying can be less successful at cooking foods that require moist heat, such as cakes and cookies, though there are ways to adapt these recipes to an air fryer that can produce acceptable results.

In a conventional oven, heat is produced from an electric or gas element, and the temperature slowly spreads throughout the oven as it warms up. This allows for a more controlled cooking process, but it also means that it takes longer to cook foods than with an air fryer, and it can be difficult to get crisp, golden-brown results. An air fryer, on the other hand, uses rapid air technology to heat up quickly and is much smaller than a traditional oven. This makes it a quicker cooking option, and its small size helps the heat spread evenly across the food for crispy, golden-brown results.

Is an Air Fryer Oven Really Better Than a Traditional Oven?

The fact that an air fryer operates more like a convection oven than a conventional oven can cause some confusion, since the two appliances work in very different ways. A conventional oven is great for roasting vegetables, baking pizza, and making casseroles, as well as many other types of dishes that are ideal for an oven.

Air fryers, on the other hand, are great for reheating leftovers and heating frozen items like fries or pancakes for 1-2 people. They are also more versatile than a microwave, which can be used to heat food for only one or two people, and they are often considered to be better for baked goods, such as cakes and cookies, than an oven.

To bake a recipe in an air fryer, reduce the temperature by about 25 degrees and decrease the cooking time by about 20 percent. This is the easiest way to make a dish turn out perfectly, but it is important to note that it is not a substitute for a traditional oven. If you are not careful, your baked food will end up soggy and limp. This is because the air in an air fryer is circulating so fast, it can blow away the moisture in foods and cause them to collapse.
