ESA launches astronaut recruitment campaign for the first time in eleven years
These new recruits will work alongside the astronauts currently employed by ESA.
Over the next few years, ESA plans to recruit up to 100 new staff each year for the agency as a whole.
“The starting point will be March 31, 2021, when applications for the position of astronaut are opened. ESA strongly encourages women to apply, as the agency seeks to strengthen gender diversity in its ranks,” she said in a statement.
“Thanks to a strong mandate from ESA Member States at our last Ministerial Council in 2019, Europe is taking its place at the heart of space exploration. To go further than ever, we need to look even further ahead “, explained the Director General of ESA, Johann-Dietrich Wörner, quoted by the press release.
According to him, this recruitment process is the first step. “And I am delighted to see the Agency develop in all areas of space exploration and innovation, with our international partners, in the years to come,” he added.
The call for applications will be open from March 31 to May 28. ESA will only consider applications submitted on the ESA Career website within the next eight weeks. The six-step selection process will then begin, and is expected to end in October 2022.
