French Tableware – Styles and Designs

French dinnerware, like French provincial furniture, has a unique look and feel. The designs on the dinnerware will add charm to your home decor or table setting. The pieces are colorful and attractive. They’re great as side dishes or as full sets for a casual dinner. There are some pieces that are for decoration purposes only.

French-style dinnerware often has those warm colors that make you think of a French country meadow in full bloom. Pale greens, sunny yellows, and sky blues are common. There are often hints of lavender or pink to bring more pastels to the tableware palette. Color is perhaps the most distinctive aspect of the country earthenware style.

A complete dinnerware set can include all the usual dishes and side dishes you’d expect. In addition to the color palette mentioned above, you can find additional elements of whimsy in the design. Roosters, flowers and other decorative elements on a white or cream background are typical of the pieces you are holding. If you want to mix and match, solid-color stoneware makes a nice contrast to the colorful dinnerware in this style.

The crockery is sometimes painted and fired by hand, so each piece is totally unique. Other parts are machine made, but no less attractive. In addition to the standard cutlery, you can find matching pieces that are wonderful for serving dishes. Some unusual shapes, such as square or rectangular bowls, can be used as serving bowls or as decorative touches elsewhere.

Although not all pieces are hand painted, many pieces have this style of dinnerware like hand painting feel. There are scenes that could come out of a painting of a nature scene. There are also solid color blocks bordered by complementary or contrasting geometric designs. Those pieces that have more color use the color as background. Pastoral scenes tend to be on a white or off-white background.

Decorative pieces on dinnerware can be many different items. Items can be useful, such as pitchers, potholders, or pots. Oversized serving bowls that are unusually shaped are a kind of attractive presence that duplicate designs or lines on cutlery. Square bowls are an example. Scalloped round bowls are somewhat more common, but not when the bowls are decorated with natural colors and patterns.

For a real change of pace in tableware, you can use some non-tableware items for decorative purposes. Ceramic items, such as pheasants in soft natural colors or whimsical chickens, make interesting centerpieces for dinner. These types of centerpieces combine very well with a rural atmosphere in French tableware.

If you’re interested in the look of French dinnerware, don’t be afraid to make a statement in color. Use the blues, greens and yellows on your tablecloths to choose the color of the covered dishes. The look will be more casual than other types of dinnerware, but it pays off in unique and attractive dinnerware.
