Paramount serves movie fans in their living room

The streaming war gets a bit more intense. The Hollywood studio Paramount starts with its own home viewing platform.

As if there weren’t enough streaming platforms yet, the Paramount film studio is now also coming with its own subscription service. Owner ViacomCBS is upgrading CBS All Access, a subscription service of the TV network of the same name, to a worldwide streaming channel with 2,500 films. The studio behind ‘The Godfather’, ‘Titanic’ and the ‘Mission: Impossible’ series can, in addition to its own portfolio, also draw on the libraries of legendary film studios such as Miramax (known for the Tarantino films) and MGM (the studio behind James Bond).

Paramount plans to air new movies on its streaming service five weeks after the first theatrical screening.

The film studio plans to broadcast new films on its streaming service five weeks after the first theatrical screening. For upcoming blockbusters like ‘Mission: Impossible 7’ and ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ that will be 45 days. That is half of the traditional 90 days in which films can be seen exclusively on the silver screen.

Paramount + isn’t the first streaming service to tinker with the theatrical window. HBO plans to launch all new films, including blockbusters like ‘Dune’ or ‘Matrix 4’, simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max this year.

The world’s second oldest Hollywood studio launches Paramount + on March 4 in the US, Canada and South America. It will be Europe’s turn at the end of March. Scandinavia gets the scoop. Nothing is known about Belgium.
