South African Mastiff: Built for Exercise

The South African Mastiff is a large dog clearly built to be a working dog. This breed of mastiff is also popularly known as “boerboel”. The name is derived from the word “boer” which is in Afrikaans / Dutch and when translated into English means “farmer”.

This dog was originally bred for the main purpose of protecting the farm during the early days in South Africa. It is not really clear where the breed originated, but it is widely believed that this is the result of the interbreeding of indigenous African dogs with those brought in by the Dutch, the British, or perhaps the French.

This is a breed of heavy mastiff very similar to the English Mastiff. They are highly intelligent, obedient, and possess a strong territorial instinct, which is perfect for protecting farm property and equipment. The dog is ideal for human companionship, as the breed requires such close human interaction. Left alone for long periods of time, they become destructive and dangerous. On the other hand, you cannot live in an apartment if you decide that you want to have a mastiff as a pet.

They need space for activity and exercise. Denying them this space generates health problems. They need the training as much as their teachers need it. But while they need it, they cannot be left alone, as they have a tendency to be destructive. They also don’t get along with a stranger, which is why they must be introduced to people and other dogs from the start. This is key to avoiding aggression from the dog.

The South African Mastiff needs space to run and play. Long walks should be carried out every day. This should provide each member of the family with exercise that should work wonders for both the family and the pet. What this mastiff demands in interaction, attention and activity, they make up for in grooming. The dog is an average shedder and only needs an occasional bath and grooming. This should be good news for those who find an aquatic exercise one of their least favorite activities.

The South African Mastiff could be the pet you are looking for. Think about the requirements of caring for this Mastiff and decide what it has to offer, and then make an informed decision before deciding if this breed of dog is right for you. I toast to you and your happy pet!
