Once upon a time, I took my group of animal communication students to the San Antonio Zoo.

His instructions were to roam around and find animal teachers with whom to practice communicating for about an hour. Then we were all going to meet at the elephant enclosure because there was a very special elephant named Ginny whom I wanted to introduce to you. I also wanted to tell you an amazing elephant story – Ginny’s story.

They had learned how to better connect and open the conversation. Some of the students, who were very sensitive and empathetic like me, were concerned.

What if the animal’s story was heartbreaking? What if they are in pain, angry or upset or sad …? What if their misery was more than they could bear?

Oh.

I understood your concerns. I have felt them myself and have often been told by some students that they were afraid to work with rescued, abused or sick animals, in transition … for the same reasons.

But here’s the thing …

Whatever is happening or has already happened to the animal is part of its history. What they need is the ability to communicate and be heard in order to heal and let it go.

It is not your job to take care of their things when you open a channel to communicate.

Your job is to give them a way to be understood, to feel compassionate and loving care, to create a heart-centered space to listen and care, and THAT is such a precious gift.

Many times healing happens, positive changes happen that were unexpected, and right in front of your eyes (if you do it right), you can see them being more present, heal, grow, breathe a great sigh of relief and let the past go.

It is a miracle to witness, and moving beyond belief.

So, tissues in the pockets, open and available hearts, with a clear and loving intention, they are gone!

When we met later in the elephant enclosure, they were delighted with their experiences. Some animals ignored them, they were too lost in their own world and they weren’t interested in talking to a human.

Other animals were so grateful to be heard, they were excited and delighted.

They said things like, “Wait, did you say something? You dense human, can you hear me? That can’t be right … I thought humans were too unconscious to communicate. Seriously, are you really talking to ME? ” And can you hear me too? My God! Let me go find my friends! “

And other animals came running eager to witness the miracle of a human who could hear them and speak their language.

Very funny !! And the stories they told? Oh my.

Comforting! Inspiring! Touching! Wow.

Today I have another story to tell you.

A few weeks earlier, a zoo teacher called me to come help them with one of their elephants.

Ginny, the 50-year-old matriarch of the small herd of elephants at the zoo, had killed her main keeper.

No one else had been there when it happened, so there were no witnesses. Only the evidence of the carnage remained.

When I arrived, they had her chained, in a metal cage barely big enough for her body. She stood there dejected but proud, calm and withdrawn. Resigned and waiting for her fate to be determined.

The manipulators and management had not decided whether or not they would have to kill her.

Why had he turned rebellious?

Was it dangerous?

Would it hurt someone else?

What happened for her to kill that man?

Before they decided what to do with her, they wanted me to talk to her and find out exactly what happened.

So I went in and found all the humans sitting in a circle waiting for me. I greeted them, sat down, and took my place.

I only had a moment to say hello to Ginny, whom I had never met before, and offer my assurance that I intended to be her voice and that I really did care what happened to her.

They didn’t give me any more information than you know at the moment, so I closed my eyes and tuned in to Ginny, asking her to tell me what happened.

She told me that the man often mistreated her and her family flock. That he hadn’t been there for long, but that he was neither wanted nor wanted. That he often appeared reeking of alcohol and acting bad, weirdly, unpredictably.

That fateful day he decided he had had enough. He had hurt and terrified them long enough.

Her job as a matriarch was to protect her family, so she made the difficult decision and took action.

She simply calmly walked over to him, grabbed him around the waist, lifted him up and held him up, turned him face down and hit his head against the ground with such force that it split his skull.

And that was that.

He took a deep breath and I thanked him for telling me.

I relayed his story to the people present.

They had tears in their eyes as they listened, and then they looked at each other.

They told me yes, he was abusive and yes, he was often drunk. Nobody liked him. No one cried for him.

They asked me what Ginny’s intentions were towards the rest of them … would it hurt them if they let her go?

When I asked her, Ginny said, “No, you are all kind and kind-hearted people. I don’t want to hurt you. I just want my family to be safe and respected.”

With a few more assurances from her that they were indeed safe, they eagerly released their chains, opened the cage, and released her.

We all had tears in our eyes when she reached out to thank those closest to her with a gentle touch of her trunk.

The look in his eyes … well, I cry just to honestly remember.

And so she continued as the matriarch of the pack. She never hurt anyone else.

That brings us back to where we started … It was only a few weeks later that I was there at the zoo with my students.

After the students finished their conversations with the animals, we all agreed to reconnect at the elephant enclosure.

We were at the other end of the room, sitting on a bench in the shade. We chatted about our extraordinary experiences.

Then … I saw Ginny at the opposite end of the room away from us.

She had been eating alone away from the crowd.

But suddenly she was very still … and she stopped chewing.

She raised her head, then looked directly at us across the room as her ears perked up with excitement.

He then reached down and scooped up a big pile of hay in his trunk and carried it as he walked there …

And then it stopped, right in front of us!

As he watched us, he dropped the hay and began to chew.

He greeted us warmly, welcoming us to his home. He answered many of our questions and the students were delighted to hear his sweet and kind voice.

Suddenly, one of the elephant keepers came running up in alarm.

They said, “What are you doing to that elephant? She never pays attention to tourists or zoo visitors. Why is she so interested in you?”

So we told him the story, and as soon as he knew who I was, he wanted to shake my hand and hug me. With tears in her eyes, she thanked me profusely for my help in saving Ginny’s life.

And that’s why I do the work that I do.

It makes a difference.
