Tips for getting your kids to do chores

Chores are one of the hardest things a parent has to encourage their children to do. We tell ourselves day in and day out that they are just kids and they need to have fun and act like kids, but at the same time they need to be responsible. Not only is it a responsible thing to do, but it’s also good that they help because we can’t do everything ourselves. Unless he’s a stay-at-home dad who doesn’t work in a business, chances are he doesn’t have much time during the day to do it.

Encouraging your kids to do chores is the right thing to do, but do you know how to get them to do it without having an ongoing argument every day? It’s hard to make that happen, but it’s not impossible. Here are some tips to help you get through this difficult part of life.

1. The allowance is a good way to get your children to do chores. You get paid for the work you do, whether you have a job or own a business, you get paid for the things you do each day. This shows children’s responsibility and gives them an incentive to do so.

2. Reward your children with something special if they do all their homework on time and without being told. This reward could be a toy they’ve had their eye on, that new CD they’ve been begging you to buy, or it could be the t-shirt everyone has and they should have too. When they have something to look forward to, they will want to do the work so they can get what they want.

3. Depending on your child’s age, having his favorite food may be enough for him to do his homework. Of course, this would have to be a meal that you don’t have regularly and the whole family should eat it.

4. Create a chart and ask your child to put a sticker on the square for the task they do each day. Once a certain number of stickers have been placed, the child will be able to choose where to go for dinner.

Most kids think housework is the worst thing in the world, but that’s not the case when they have something to look forward to every week. It doesn’t matter what the reward is, as long as they have something they can do without too much fuss.

The most important thing to continually remind your children is that you don’t force them to do chores to be bad, you force them to learn how to do things and it’s not bad to help around the house.
