What is the best fish tank for a crayfish?

What is the best fish tank for a pet crayfish? Well the answer to this question depends on a few things. Are you planning to have other fish living with your crayfish? Are you planning to have another crayfish as a pet all together? Because if you do, a desktop aquarium or 10 gallon fish tank is probably not ideal. I know from experience. Personally, I would recommend a 20 gallon fish tank for just one crawfish, nothing smaller.

Crayfish are very dirty

Crayfish are dirty little creatures. They take out a lot of waste. And this waste can make your tank unsightly and toxic to other fish, if you have them. With a larger tank, such as a 20 gallon fish tank, there is more water to absorb the load of all your pet’s crayfish waste.

Crayfish are aggressive and territorial

Crawfish eat and fight almost anything. They are super aggressive and territorial. Having said that, if you plan to have other fish in your tank, you will want a tank that is large enough for everyone to feel comfortable. Having a larger tank will reduce the chances of the crawfish eating the other fish. They will have more space to swim. And your pet crayfish will have his little territory to himself. Remember, however, that with crawfish, any other fish in your tank can become crawfish food at any time. I always suggest putting aggressive fish in the tank and fish that swim near the top. Red-tailed shark, mollies, and ax fish can often work well with crayfish as pets. They have done it for me in the past anyway.

Water changes

With a 20 gallon fish tank or larger, managing the water changes for your crayfish and other fish will be much easier. Speaking of which, be sure to change about 25% of the water weekly. This will ensure a clean and healthy tank. One that will help keep your other fish, as well as your pet crayfish, healthy.

If you get two crayfish

If you decide to buy two crayfish and put them in a fish tank. In my experience, it is only a matter of time before one eats the other. Personally, I think you will need a 20+ gallon tank for two crawfish. However, if you must have two crawfish, make sure you have separate hiding places for both. These can be purchased online, made from PVC, or can be found in most pet stores that sell aquariums.
