The May mySore University result may be a disappointment to those who have put forth the effort and waited patiently for the result. For those of you who were outvoted by your fellow students in the primary elections, may be this is the wake-up call. The election was won by a margin of twenty five to fifteen percent, with one vote being discarded. In this article I will explore what went wrong with the result and what lies ahead for the opposition.
The overall election process was not smooth nor fair. It is important to remember that there are always winners and losers in any election. In the lastorate election the winner was chosen despite receiving a majority of the votes. This result might seem extraordinary, but it is not uncommon in the municipal and district political arena. One of the most unfortunate implications of this result is the lack of political will amongst the leaders to take immediate steps to correct the problems that have surfaced and will only surface over the next few months.
There is a large number of disappointments that are likely to be addressed in the coming weeks and months. One of the most significant difficulties facing the governing body and their coalition partners is the situation that currently exists on the ground at MySore University. It is obvious that a large number of students are upset with the result and this unrestrained behaviour by the police is creating a serious problem for the future of academic and social life at the university. There is an enormous amount of conflict that exists between the students and parents as well as between the students themselves. These are all combustible situations which are likely to erupt at any given time.

It is likely that the number of protests that are caused due to the current situation is on the order of a few dozen and that number is growing by the day. The main focus of these protests is apparent in the slogans that are being used by the student protestors. ‘MySore University result May Jupiter’, is a common slogan which is being used by many of the groups who are participating in the current demonstrations against the University.
The number one factor that is likely to influence the way the current situation at MySore is handled is the way the police have handled the situation. It has been clear from the start that the police were not prepared to handle the massive numbers of students that turned up to participate in the political demonstrations over the last few weeks. In the days leading up to the election many people were calling for a boycott of the university by any student. However, there has been very little coverage given to this issue and it has unfortunately led to a situation where a number of innocent students have lost their lives. This may well be the tipping point that leads to thousands more joining in the street demonstrations over the coming weeks and months.
Another possible indication of the direction that MySore University may be heading is the appointment of a new Police and Security Service (PSAS) which will take over the role of the current SSS. The new PSAS is being selected on a wider scale and will include a greater diversity of ethnicity in order to provide a more balanced representation of the general population of the city. It is clear from the initial demonstrations by the protesters that the overwhelming majority of the students do not want to engage with any form of political activity while their tuition fee dispute goes through. Given this, it is likely that a positive result will be obtained during the upcoming elections.
