Excessive hair loss from a lace wig can be a problem if you don’t take proper care of it. There are some maintenance techniques that will help prevent hair loss. First seal the knots on your unit before use and after each wash. A very good knot sealer is called the Knot Sealer. Flip the wig over, spray onto the mesh or lace, and allow it to dry completely before putting it on.

Once you wash your unit, let it air dry. After the cap is completely dry, apply your sealer. Sprinkling extra hold hairspray over mesh or lace is also effective. Some wig wearers use an acrylic sealer. It can be purchased at your local craft store.

Another thing that can cause the wig to shed excessively is applying oils or conditioners near the base of the wig where the knots are. This can cause knots to loosen and slip when brushing or styling the hair. Even if you use a knot sealer product, the use of oils and conditioners can weaken the effectiveness.

When applying conditioner to your unit, try to stay away from knots in the base. Make sure your hair is completely dry before styling or brushing. If the hair is not completely dry, the hairstyle looses the knots. Although it may not fall out right away, once your hair is dry and you start styling it, the wig may start to fall out. Also, avoid excessive brushing and combing of the wig. Remember that the longevity of your wig depends on how well you care for it.
