Are there any downsides to website templates?

Website templates have a number of advantages, but people should also consider their share of disadvantages. For example, it may not be easy to customize a website template to fit your requirements. If this is so, they need the required skills or software to do it on their own.

  1. They are not unique and exclusive.

Since website templates are downloaded from the Internet, they are accessible to many other users. Therefore, these templates are not unique and exclusive to a person, company or business. When people use them, they may end up with a website that looks like several others. To ensure that no one uses the same website template, they may have to pay a high price for it. The problem is that other customers may have downloaded and used it before even seeing it. Therefore, if you want an exclusive design for your company or for personal use, you need a custom web design.

  1. There are limitations when it comes to customization.

There is only a certain point at which a website template can be modified. For this reason, it may not be suitable for your needs. In case there is a lot of web content and you choose a website template with limited space, the extra text could change the appearance of the design by stretching it. At that point, they may have realized that the template doesn’t work for them, even though they’ve already paid for it and may have downloaded it.

  1. Personalization requires specific software.

There are website templates that can be easily customized, edited, and updated using Microsoft Frontpage and other available website creation software, but some are more complex and require some knowledge of coding, website creation, and photo editing. They must, in some way, have knowledge of Macromedia Dreamweaver, Flash or HTML code. They may not have the skills or the software to edit, customize and update your site. If this is the case, you may need to hire a web developer to do the work of customizing and/or updating your web template.

  1. Image optimization requires skills.

For web pages to load fast, they need to know how to optimize images for the web. When they don’t have the required skills as well as image optimization photo editing software, this will slow down the website development process and they will need the help of a web developer.

  1. They will have to use search engine optimization.

Website templates only provide the framework for a site and are not optimized for search engines to find. To attract search engines, they must give importance to their web content. They should realize that search engines are more attracted to text than images. Website templates that have lots of graphics and Flash animation effects are captivating; however, they take a while to load and also won’t lead search engines to your website. So no matter how good a Flash website looks, it could end up lower in search engine rankings.
