Vibram Obex midrange driver

The Vibram company has been in business since 1937, they have been making the best known and popular boot soles for many of the best shoe manufacturers. If you own high performance boots, I am sure you have owned boots with a Vibram sole. They are also the manufacture of the FiveFinger shoes that started a new trend in minimalist running shoes.

A few years ago, Vibram decided to venture into the golf disc manufacturing business. Vibram discs have a rubber-based compound composition, unlike all other disc golf discs that are made from different types of plastic. The advantages of the rubber-based compound are the discs that have a better grip feel so they won’t slip out of your hand, as well as better withstanding the abuse golf discs take from hitting trees while flying at high speeds.

I recently added a third Vibram album to my bag. I have a Trak fairway driver, a Summit putter, and now an Obex midrange. Vibram says the Obex is an overstable midrange that loves headwind and has a very long glide. Marshal Street has a puck speed rating of 5. The Obex has the same speed as the Discraft Wasp and Innova Gator, and a more stable touch.

A little about me and my records. I have 16 discs in my bag, 1 ray, now 3 Vibram and 12 Discraft. I use a Buzzz on most of the mid-range shots I take, because it always goes where I want it to go, unless it’s windy. The Buzzz just isn’t good in the wind. I was really looking for a mid-range that would handle the wind. Wasp was my choice, but I was not satisfied with its performance.

I got the Obex out of the mailbox and wanted to test it, luckily the next day there was a 30-35mph wind. I was excited to test the Obex in the wind. I went to the park and took a couple of shots, and it flew straight and flat. Then I fired 5 shots in a row with an anhyzer spinning into the wind. It stayed in line spinning in the wind all 5 times.

I was impressed. With headwind and tailwind, the album did what I wanted and hoped it would. Then I threw a bunch of forehand, hyzer and anhyzer shots, the puck worked well in the wind going where I wanted it to go. The Obex has replaced the Wasp in my bag.

The only negative I can say about the disc may be that due to the rubber compound, the disc becomes soft and flexible if it is exposed to the sun for a period of time. It changed the feel of the disc, although it did not appear to affect the performance of the disc. There are not many occasions when the disc is exposed to direct sun for a long time in a gaming situation, so it is not really a problem.

Regardless of whether you are a Discraft guy or Innova guy, or will use what works best, you have to give Vibram a try and see what they are doing in disc golf. I can tell you that you won’t be disappointed if you do. A great selection of Vibram records is available from one of the best record dealers in the business, right here in Minnesota, you have to go, you have to shoot.
